Listen up, future sea-goers, because apparently, this needs to be said again. You’d think people would stop willingly falling for the most obvious cruise rip-offs. Let’s look at the Top 5 cruise traps that most cruise passengers still fall for.
1. The “All-Inclusive” Mirage
Even though cruises are supposedly “all inclusive,” the finance department is high-fiving because they know you’re about to bleed money once you’re on board. So many people buy the drink package, although it’s usually not worth it unless you’re throwing down 8 mixed drinks every day. And if that’s you, not judging, but there are programs for that.
Then there’s the specialty dining, the gift shop, the candy store, the art auctions, and… the casino.
Before you know it, you dropped three times what you spent on your “all-inclusive” cruise fare.
2. The “Upgrade”
We all get those “bid for an upgrade” emails. And if you do win, congratulations, you just paid more for that balcony cabin than if you had just booked it in the first place. But hey, you got the thrill of winning, right?
3. The “Locked In” Fare
You booked early to lock in that great rate. Except, when the price drops, you’re stuck paying the higher price because you clicked “agree” on a 5,000-word document you definitely didn’t read. If you’re lucky and you catch it yourself, because they’ll NEVER let you know, forget about a refund. You might get a “future cruise credit” if you make enough of a stink. And no, cruise travel agents cannot help.
4. Secret Perks You Missed
Some people pre-pay for early boarding or other silly perks, But what if you’ve been a loyal Royal and climbed to Plutonium status? Did you know your cabin grade or loyalty status might come with some secret perks? We’ve got free laundry, access to a special lounge, priority boarding, and even FOUR FREE DRINKS A DAY! Thing is – you have to ask about this stuff. It’s usually kind of hidden.
5. The Automatic Gratuity Guilt Trip
Automatic daily gratuities are sold as a simple, stress-free way to show your appreciation for the hardworking crew. Wrong. It’s a masterclass in corporate maneuvering. That daily charge, which can be upwards of $20 per day — PER PERSON, might be the cruise line’s way of subsidizing profits. We’ve found the hard working dishwashers or laundry crew do NOT get their cut of your cash in addition to their ridiculously low paychecks – it’s funneled into a crew pizza party or something, and the corporate big wigs use your tips to offset the payroll. Yeah, I was mad when I found that out too! Remember – gratuities are always OPTIONAL. Yes, you should tip for great service – but take the automatic tips off your room and TIP IN CASH.
